Why do some presenters communicate more effectively than others?
They are well organisedGood academic presenters have done extensive research and have taken the time to organise their content, usually asking for the opinion of their peers to get useful feedback.
they are responsiveEffective speakers make eye contact with their audience. They measure the audience interest and can adjust their presentation if they are asked questions. They know if the audience understands.
|
they are preparedGood speakers have practised and timed their presentation. Practise using clear notes or small 'palm' cards. Use software features (like hidden presenter notes) to aid your practise. They do NOT read their presentation.
they are clearGood presenters also use expression that is easily understood by their audience. They use linking words and phrases to make it clear that they are moving to the next point.
|
they speak with confidenceGood speakers are confident because they KNOW their content. This is not related to personality. Their knowledge and preparedness gives them authority to speak, despite the natural feeling of nervousness.
they are enthusiasticEnthusiasm does not mean loud and excited. It means you are genuinely interested in your topic and you genuinely want others to know about it as well. This is the main reason TED talks are so successful.
